Diversity, equity, and inclusion measures in the healthcare setting require providers to interact with people who may look, act and believe differently than themselves in a culturally safe way. Our work concentrates on reforming the current healthcare system to allow for more culturally congruent and equitable care.
All of us must learn to become comfortable with cultural differences. We recognize them immediately but often avoid addressing them. Cultural differences are uncomfortable, so we look for similarities because they are sensible and easy. The result is uniformity and assimilation, which forces those that deviate from the norm, whether by nature or nurture, to deny a part of themselves. Not good, especially when it can result in biased care or healthcare avoidance. Recognizing differences is very important in showing we appreciate individuality, that is, you being you and me being me! It also means you are welcome here.

Dr. Jitana Benton-Lee

Nurse Jitana’s methodology differentiates her from other health equity consultants. Her philosophy is “Authentic connections above all else!”
Nurse Jitana, in her 30+ years in healthcare, gleans knowledge on creating inclusive health care environments for diverse patient populations through nursing care provisions to rural African Americans, migrant farmworkers, Appalachian Americans, LGBTQ+ persons, and the deaf and hearing-impaired community; and by conducting studies on the cross-cultural development of healthcare providers and systems.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, CommonHealth Action, and the National Collaborative for Health Equity selected her as a Culture of Health Leader for her commitment to health equity. She was also an Equity Conscience fellow for Community Change Network and a Health Equity Scholar with the Center for Health Equity Education and Advocacy.
